If it was me, there should be a link that I could verify that it was me (and force a password reset). If they had to try more than 3-5 times, my account should have locked and Groupon have sent an email letting me know that someone tried to log into my account the wrong password. I’m sure the thief didn’t get my password right on the first try (it’s not obvious and was a mix of letters and numbers). But most importantly – Groupon needs to have better procedures to protect their customers. I’m a dumbass because I shouldn’t keep my credit cards stored in accounts like that since I don’t make purchases all that often. Lo was already handling the bank part and they are sending us new cards – which is totally annoying to have to change automatic payments.Ī couple of thoughts on this. They also recommended that we alert the credit card company, even though it was unlikely they were able to recover our entire credit card number since it’s encrypted other than the last 4 digits. I called Groupon and after going through lots of hoops for them to find my account (since it’s not longer attached to my email and that’s how they store the accounts) they said the orders did get cancelled and that there no pending charges and my credit cards were removed from the account. I also could have a new password sent to my account because my email was no longer connected to it. Probably in the meantime that I was changing this stuff in my account, the thief had changed my account email address, so even with the changed password, I could no longer get in to my account.

I was actually able to cancel the purchases and remove my stored credit cards so no other purchases could be made, but when I tried to change my password, it wouldn’t let me back in.

I couldn’t get into my account with my normal password at first, but then somehow I did, and sure enough, there were two pending purchases for netbooks totaling about $1200. I decided I should log into Groupon just in case to make sure my account looked okay. My initial reaction that this was spam and it was a phishing email trying to get me to log in to my account through the link (removed above) so they could get my info.
